I have become a Candidate for the vacant Situation of Professor of Music in the University of Edinburgh¹, and am extremely anxious to collect the opinions of Musical Authorities as to my fitness for the Office, I have always met with so much kindness from my Musical brethren in Germany that I am induced to request from you a testimonial as to² any merits I may possess. My kind friend Mendelssohn has sent me his good wishes³ for my success, and with your help I think I may attain the position I look for.
I shall feel much flattered by a few lines, which I might transmit to the University stating your feelings as to my zeal for our Art, and that you consider I am worthy of being a Candidate for the Office.
