[A remarkable fine letter giving his reasons for not being able to produce his Oratorio (The Last Jugdement) for the London festival.] my Oratorio is not suitable for a performance on the second day of your festival. 1st Its character, style & even the words (which, as in the ʼMessiah,ʻ are taken from the Holy Scriptures) are too similar to the work you intend giving on the first day: it would tire the audience to hear two such works so soon after one another, to the exclusion of the lighter Concert music [...] 2nd My oratorio is complete in itself & demands a fresh & attentive audience so that I could not permit it to be proceded by a symphony [...] 3rdly Moreover is has its own Overture of two movements, & 4thly it completely fills up the time that the German public will listen to music [...] even the with the best of Orchestras, at last exhausts the listernes that all sympathy is lost. It really takes the rigid sangfroid & the endurance of a London public to the whole of the ʼMessiahʻ in one evening. [...]
