Der Druck ergänzt den Inhalt: „Spohr (Louis) Autograph letter signed ("Louis Spohr"), to a musician in Weimar, discussing the recent innovations in construction of horns and trumpets and the use of valves to alter the pitch and the possible use of these developments in solo and orchestral music, enclosing the scores of his opera Zemire and Azor and Roland which he commends to the writer for close and careful study and expressing regret that they will not meet in Weimar, 4 pages, 4to, first leaf repaired, with traces of mount, otherwise in good condition, Kassel, 16 January [18]23“.
[Ergänzung 07.04.2026: Beschreibung nach Inhaltsangabe 1: „Autograph letter signed. / 4 pp., 4to. Cassel, 16th January, 1823 / An extremely interesing letter dealing with a new invention for raising and lowering the tone of trumpet and horn, which the writer things very useful for solo players, but would not like to introduce it in the orchestra. He also refers to a singer Miss Roland whom he has engaged for the Cassel Opera.“]
Die sehr ähnliche Inhaltsangabe im früheren Sotheby’s-Katalog lässt eine Identität mit diesem Brief vermuten, wobei dann dort ein fehlerhaftes Datum anzunehmen wäre; es könnte sich freilich auch um einen zeitlich nahen Brief mit ähnlichem Inhalt handeln: „Spohr (Louis) A.L.s. 3½ pp. 4to, Cassel, Jan. 23, n.y.[sic!] a long and interesting letter speaking of his orchestra and of invention for raising and lowering the tone of trumpet or horn, two words torn away“.
Da sich Spohr hier offensichtlich mit einem Musiker in Weimar austauscht, liegt der dortige Hofkapellmeister Johann Nepomuk Hummel als Empfänger nahe; dies lässt sich derzeit jedoch nicht sicher belegen. Zumindest scheint sich Hummel in seinem nächsten erhaltenen Brief an Spohr vom 21.02.1823 nicht auf diesen Brief zu beziehen.
